Keeping in Touch

As with any complex institution, there are a lot of things going on around the AECP department, and indeed, around the Institute and the university as a whole. How does one keep up with news, upcoming events, opportunities and other interesting goings-on.

  1. For important (as in, important to your degree) information, there are listservs to which you are automatically subscribed. These lists, managed by Susan Hall, include students according to their degree and program.
  2. There is an opt-in SOS listserv to which various event announcements are posted every day or two. There is a medium volume of email on this listserv, and some (many?) of the messages that come through may not directly apply to you. However, to find out about what’s going on, and to enjoy the opportunity to hear about things that you wouldn’t otherwise hear, the listserv is a good choice. To sign up, click here and add your email address.
  3. SOS is switching its main communications vehicle to this weblog, so it’s worth checking a couple of times a week. If you already use an RSS feedreader, like Bloglines, Google Reader, NetNewsWire, or any other web-based or client-based applications, just add the SOS Online RSS Feed to your existing list. If you are using the Firebox browser (and if not, why haven’t you switched yet?) you can select Tools>Options>Feeds to set up a feed reader within the browser. The only catch is that you do have to check the feeds to know about updates. Still wondering what RSSĀ  readers are? Click here.
  4. SOS has been very active in attempting to procure a large screen announcement display panel for our department. If we are successful, daily and weekly events in the department will be posted to the display panel, so coming to the floor will help you keep in touch.

Thesis defences at University of Toronto are, by policy, private and closed. Upcoming defences are posted on the main notice board on the 7th floor, but are not open to observers.
