Student Mentors

OISE, and our department, can often be a confusing and complicated place to navigate. Each year, some of our students volunteer to assist their colleagues, and especially new students, as mentors. Feel free to contact any of the following students, or any member of the SOS executive, with questions, guidance, advice and to draw on their experience with respect to course selection, supervision, study strategies, workload, social events, or even finding the best place to buy groceries or a good vegetarian restaurant! This year’s mentors can be found on the Student Mentors page.

The SOS Office is room 7-158. Drop to say hello, ask for advice or offer a suggestion.

Notices of meetings, minutes, and events are posted on the Communication Wall near the SOS office. To make sure you are notified of upcoming events, and items of particular interest to students, register on the SOS listserv and submit your preferred email address. Inquires about student issues can be emailed to us.

If you need to leave something for SOS, either slip it under the door of room 7-158, or leave it in the SOS mail slot, which is the lower-most right-hand slot in the student mailboxes near 7-162.

    Hi,

I’ve been trying to remove my email address fromt he AECP list serve, but have been un successful. I’ve followed the proper links online and then I get a message that says: you will be receiving a confirmation email shortly, which I’ve never received. It says that the list serve is managed by SOS, so I was hoping you could help.

    thanks,

      Hi Connie,
If you could send me your email address that you are subscribed to the AECP listserv with, I can remove you.
      Thanks, Nina

      Hi Samantha,

You should have received email notification in December, and again this past weekend bout the orientation event held yesterday. If not, it likely means we do not have your email on file. If you would like to stay up-to-date on further news, email us at soseven@oise.utoronto.ca so that we can add you to the list. You can also sign up for the AECP listerv at http://listserv.oise.utoronto.ca/mailman/listinfo/aecpstudents. The Graduate Students Association (GSA) will be hosting an orientation this Friday from 5-8pm (food and refreshments included) on the 5th floor of OISE. You can check out their website for more information. Hope this helps :)

    Hi,
during the information session for the M.A counselling program I asked about the difference between clinical and counselling if I was planning to go on to PhD and one of the professors said that the only difference was the population you would be dealing with but that depending on internship you could still practice with more severe pathology with M.A/PhD in counselling psychology. Are there any other adv/disadv that you guys have come across that you could let me know about.

    Hi Zahra,

Best bet would be to speak with your faculty advisor about the difference. Judy Silver is also a great contact (in the psycho ed clinic). You can email her at jsilver@oise.utoronto.ca and I’m sure she’d be happy to talk with you about it.
But essentially you’re right, with an MA/PhD in Counselling Psychology you can still practice with more severe pathology. It largely depends on what you declare as your competence on the board exams after your PhD, which is based on the kind of courses you took and the practicum/internship experience you had. To find out more about that you can check out the College of Psychologists of Ontario http://www.cpo.on.ca/new-applicants/index.aspx?id=92&ekmensel=14_submenu_0_link_1. Hope this helps!

    Hi

I’m a new MEd student starting this Fall. Does anyone know when classes end in April 2010 and start again in May 2010? I’ve searched the U of T website and OISE website and could not find something concrete.

    Thanks.
