Rendezvous with Madness Film Festival

We’re just learning that the Rendezvous with Madness Film Festival is halfway through its run this year, but we thought that many AECP students would still be interested.

The Rendezvous with Madness Film Festival explores cinematic representations of mental health and addiction. Film and video programs are followed by post-screening panel discussions with people who receive mental health and addiction services, as well as writers, directors, actors, health care professionals and academics.

There are films showing tonight through Saturday. Please check out the program and consider attending a screening.

Pedal Power at OISE November 24

Students on Seven (SOS) and TorontotheBetter present:

From bicycle-mad Paris to rush-hour New York and the back alleys of Toronto, take a ride through the changing world of bike culture.

Toronto is grappling with whether to really embrace bike culture. What does it take to be truly bike-friendly like Amsterdam, Paris, or even New York City? A series of character mini-narratives propel the film through a study of what makes a city “bikeable”.

Join co-director Chris Sumpton and Taodgh Burns from Toronto’s Community Bicycle Network for a lively discussion after the screening.

Interprofessional Volleyball Tournament for Health Professionals

To all Counselling Psychology Students;

On Sunday, November 22nd 2009 from 12-4pm students from various health disciplines will come together in a friendly volleyball tournament  to be held at Beach Blast – an indoor beach volleyball facility in Toronto. Last year a very strong Chiropractic team beat a well matched team of Naturopathic students in the competitive final!

The tournament will have both a competitive and recreation stream (games are played 6 on 6).  Stream is determined the day of according to the outcome in the first few rounds of play.
Strong volleyball skills are fantastic but not necessary to have a great day!

There is an entry fee of $20 per person, or $200 for a team of up to 12ppl.  This will include the day of volleyball, a catered lunch, water, grab bags and the chance to win one of many great prizes.
This also includes your contribution to the Arthritis Society.

Attached to the email is a poster for the tournament and a sign up sheet.  Get your teams of 6-12 players together (co-rec so at least 2 girls) and email any of the contacts listed or ipecouncil@cmcc.ca for more information. Also this tournament is open to ALL health professional tournament – so if you have friends in Physio, med, nursing etc. feel free to pass the invite along!

Nearly 4.5 million Canadians live with arthritis, 1.8 million in Ontario alone.  Let's help by raising some money for The Arthritis Society while having a great day

Actions and Info to Save History and Philosophy at OISE

Hello all:

STUDENT MEETING
Date: Monday, November 2nd
Location: OISE/Room 6-272
Time: 3-5pm

Please join us between 3-5pm on Monday, November 2nd to continue our
strategizing around continued actions against the proposed
’suspension’ of the H&P doctoral program. We will also be drafting a
student statement to present at our meeting with Dean Corman next
Tuesday.

Room 6-272 has been reserved from 9am-5pm, so you are all welcome to
drop in when you can to sign the petition, share stories, voice
concerns, and to eat the delicious and nutritious food that Jen has
made to feed our starving, lagging spirits. Let’s use this opportunity
to co-ordinate our actions before our meeting with Dean Corman.

MEET WITH THE DEAN
Date: Tuesday, November 3rd
Location: TPS LOUNGE (6th floor/OISE)
Time: 3:30pm

Dean Corman has kindly agreed to have afternoon tea with us next

History and Philosophy Petition

The History and Philosophy of Education program at OISE may be closed
on the basis of erroneous reasons bearing NO apparent relation to the
positive External Reviews of this Doctoral program nor any relation to
the report provided to OCGS by History and Philosophy in May 2009, at
their demand, in which History and Philosophy detailed the actual
vibrancy of graduate program at OISE (7 faculty, 17 Associate
Instructors, and 85 graduate students).

The University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies is currently
deciding whether to abide by this recommendation.

SIGN THIS PETITION TO TELL THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO:

1. There is a fundamental problem with the decision\’s basis to close
the graduate program based on “imminent returements”—on the basis of
the AGE of 2 of its 7 tenured faculty – who have NO plans to retire.

2. To indicate your objection to the unjustified threatened closure of
the doctoral program in History and Philosophy of Education at OISE,
UT.

Given the value of humanities, quality of this renowned program, 85
current graduate students, and committed faculty, keep this program
alive and grant it the new faculty position that will evidence
institutional support presently denied.

Urgent Student Meeting with Dean Corman

Want to Voice Questions about the threatened “suspension” of History
and Philosophy of Education’s PhD?

Come out on TUESDAY NOVEMBER 3rd, at 3 pm to speak with Dean of SGS,
Brian Corman.

As a result of a successful student action Thursday at the GEC student
tea, Dean of SGS, Brian Corman, has agreed to meet with the students
and supporters next Tuesday, November 3rd, at 3 pm. Anticipating the
importance of this first opportunity to discuss our perspectives, we
need to show a strong student presence.

We will not accept the integrity of a process that does not include
us, the students, as key stakeholders. This is our opportunity to act
in a way that shows we will not stand to be dismissed. Please come
prepared with questions, with your letters, with your expressions of
solidarity.

Please circulate this message widely.

BRING YOUR Questions–Expressions of Solidarity—Statements of
Testimony—Letters of Support—Signs of Protest
